What you need to know

What is Cyber Essentials and why do I need it for my business in Yorkshire?

Cyber Essentials is an annually renewing certification provided by IASME that ensures that the core systems are secured against the most common cyber threats. Considered by many industries (and backed by the UK government) as the standard for cybersecurity, meeting Cyber Essentials requirements makes your business secure from most cyber-attacks. In fact, according to insurance data, businesses in Yorkshire and beyond are 92% less likely to make a cyber-attack related claim than those without.

Cyber Essentials Plus includes the same criteria, but as well as the self-assessment, includes a full audit by a third party to ensure all requirements are met.

If you’re a supplier, many businesses ask for a Cyber Essentials certification to ensure cybersecurity throughout the pipeline; it’s also a mandatory requirement to gain certain government contracts. Even when they don’t, it shows your business you’re a reliable partner that’s serious about your security. It’s a great certification for your business all-round; protecting your business, strengthening your supply chain position, and opening the door to contracts that require certification.

FAQs

Both Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus have the same passing criteria, though the former is completed via self-assessment, and the latter also requires a third party to audit your systems to ensure compliance – Flyford are here to help with both.

  • That depends on the size of your business! For basic level Cyber Essentials certification:
    • 0-9 employees will cost £320 + VAT.
    • 10-49 employees will cost £440 + VAT.
    • 50-249 employees will cost £500 + VAT.
    • 250 employees or more will cost £600 + VAT.
    •
  • For Plus, certification costs more due to the need for a verified body to conduct the assessment. Of course, these are the certification fees set by IASME. Implementation and consultancy costs depend on the work required to bring your systems up to standard.

This completely depends on your cybersecurity posture is before Flyford help get you compliant. However, once application is submitted for Cyber Essentials, you have 6 months to complete the self-assessment. For most businesses, the process takes between 2–6 weeks. If your systems are already well managed, certification can be achieved quickly. If improvements are required, we’ll implement what’s needed and guide you through submission

Cyber Essentials is mandatory for businesses bidding for certain UK government contracts. It is also increasingly required by larger organisations within supply chains. Even where it isn’t mandatory, many businesses now expect it as standard.

No, but it does make the process significantly smoother. The assessment involves firewall configuration, device security, user access control, patch management and malware protection. Many businesses find technical guidance helpful to avoid delays or failed submissions. If you’re looking to work with Flyford for managed IT services, too – we can help with Cyber Essentials as part of your service.
